Friuli Innovazione visits Vienna and Innsbruck Life Science clusters
From 31 January to 2 February 2011 Friuli Innovazione joined the delegation of Italian Bioparks invited to visit Vienna and Innsbruck Life Science clusters. The visit was supported by the Austrian Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth and hosted by Life Science Austria Vienna Region and by Cluster Life Sciences Tirol. The Italian delegation included representatives from AREA Science Park, Assobiotec, Centro di Biomedicina Molecolare (CBM), Friuli Innovazione, Parco Scientifico Romano, Parco Tecnologico Padano, Sardegna Ricerche, Toscana Life Sciences Foundation and Technical Committee on Biotechnology of APSTI e Assobiotec.
On the initial day, the first session of meetings was introduced by a welcoming address of the Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth, followed by an overview of the Austrian and Italian life sciences scenes presented by Life Science Austria and Assobiotec, respectively. The second session detailed Vienna and Italian bioparks and clusters as Life Science locations as well as support measures and funding opportunities for life sciences projects and ventures in Austria.
On the second day, the Italian delegation was introduced to the Life Science Cluster in Innsbruck, with an insight into the Tyrolean Life Sciences environment and a visit to local companies representing success stories of technology transfer between academia and business (Med-El, Oncotyrol and Biocrates).
The third and last day was dedicated to an insight into the Viennese Life Sciences scene, with the opportunity to meet executives from the company Emergentec and from the Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology.
The mutual exchange with the Austrian Life Sciences clusters has been extremely fruitful and constructive and has offered a concrete opportunity to identify common interests for future collaborations. Follow-up contacts and visits are already being evaluated from both sides.
