It has been demonstrated that a high degree of correlation exists between the onset of a pathology, the disease course, and the treatment responses on one side and the patient’s genetic and molecular patterns on the other. Molecular data from blood or tissue samples and clinical information are now integrated into computational models in order to identify early indicators of a disease and to personalize the treatment.
Research and clinical practice are moving toward the integration of clinical data with molecular profiling data from genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other “-omics”. This is the future challenge to achieve a personalized medicine.
The project goal is thus to develop an integrated intelligent system to collect, manage and make clinical and molecular data of patients suffering cardiac, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases available for researchers and doctors.
Project D.NAMICA will implement three pilot projects to improve the understanding of the genetic characteristics of a patient and his responses to a personalized treatment. Pilot projects will be implemented in the following sectors: cardiology, oncology and neurodegenerative diseases. New diagnostic tests will be evaluated in the clinical practice and innovative platforms will be employed for the sequencing and the molecular treatment. These steps will enhance the advancing of molecular medicine in ordinary clinical practice.

The duration of the project D.NAMICA is 30 months; it is divided into the following actions:
- Industrial Research
Genetic-molecular parameters in patients affected by cardiac, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases will be analyzed by advanced sequencing techniques. The management of these data will be complementary to those collected during the clinic experimentation phase using a tailored computing platform to collect, integrate, store and share data and elaborations for clinical research.
- Experimental Development
The partners, using standard approaches, will develop diagnostic panels able to detect genetic polymorphisms for the investigated pathologies; new genomic tests will be developed as well. Prototypal devices for the connection and interface of data surveying instruments (for clinical, biological and genomic analysis) will be created for the implementation of the integrated EMR. A user friendly computing platform prototype will be conceived for the three pilot experimentations.
